For most small businesses the honest answer is: both are good, the business plans cost about the same, and both say they don't train on your business data by default. Pick ChatGPT if your team wants one tool that also makes images and already knows it. Pick Claude if your work is heavy on long documents, careful writing, or building your own tools. Then test it on your real work before you commit.

Full disclosure: we're a consulting shop that builds mostly on Claude. Our own nine-agent operations team runs on it, and so do the AI pieces of our mortgage and rental software. Claude is made by Anthropic, and we're independent and not affiliated with Anthropic or OpenAI. We've tried to keep this fair, and we link every fact so you can check it.

How do the prices compare?

They're closer than most people expect.

The takeaway: price shouldn't decide this for a small team. Fit should.

Do ChatGPT and Claude use my business data for training?

On the business plans, no, by default.

  • ChatGPT Business and Enterprise: OpenAI states it does not train on business data by default (OpenAI enterprise privacy).
  • Claude Team, Enterprise and API: Anthropic states it will not use inputs or outputs from commercial products to train models, with exceptions if you send feedback such as a thumbs up or down, or otherwise opt in. Team and Enterprise admins can turn off the rating buttons for the whole organization.

The personal plans are where people get caught.

  • ChatGPT Free and Plus: OpenAI's help center says data sharing for training is on by default and you can switch it off under Data Controls (OpenAI help).
  • Claude Free, Pro and Max: chats may be used for training if you allow it in your model improvement setting. If you do, Anthropic says de-identified chats can be kept up to 5 years (Anthropic privacy center).

If employees use personal accounts for work, that's the real risk, whichever tool you pick. We cover the full checklist in Is It Safe to Use AI With Customer Data?.

What is ChatGPT better at for business?

Being fair here matters, so these are real advantages.

  • Image generation built in. ChatGPT makes images right in the chat. Claude focuses on text, code, documents and charts, so for photos or illustrations you'd pair it with a separate image tool.
  • Name recognition. Your team has probably used it. Less training, faster adoption.
  • Shared workspace agents. OpenAI made workspace agents generally available in ChatGPT Business in May 2026. They can be shared across a workspace and run on a schedule (ChatGPT Business release notes).
  • Lots of connectors. Business workspaces connect to many common tools, and admins can turn individual connectors off (same release notes).
  • Voice. If your team likes talking to the assistant on their phones, ChatGPT's voice mode is worth trying in your test.

What is Claude better at for business?

This is where we see it win in our own work.

  • Long documents. Upload a long contract, policy or report and ask detailed questions. In the chat app, Claude reads text and visuals in PDFs up to 100 pages, and text in longer ones (Claude help center).
  • Writing that sounds like a person. This is subjective, so test it. Our team prefers its drafts for customer emails and website copy because they need less cleanup.
  • Building software. Claude Code is included on Pro and Team (pricing). We built the East Coast Mortgage portal, our rental operations app, and products like Hoaly and Run The Deal with it.
  • Following instructions over a long task. When we give an agent a strict rule, like "never guess at a price" on the Wander Luxe guest assistant, it holds the line well. Still, we review anything that goes to a guest.
  • Projects with sharing on Team. Each team or department gets its own instructions and files, so the assistant starts every chat knowing the business.

Which one should my team pick?

Use this as a starting point, not a verdict.

If your team mostly...Lean toward
Needs images for social posts and ads in the same toolChatGPT
Already uses ChatGPT daily and likes itChatGPT
Works with long PDFs, contracts or reportsClaude
Writes a lot of customer-facing copyTest both, then decide
Wants to build internal tools or automationsClaude
Lives in Microsoft 365 or Google WorkspaceEither; both connect, so test with your files

Notice that "writes a lot" says test both. That's honest. Writing quality is the thing people argue about most, and it depends on your voice and your prompts more than the model.

How do I test ChatGPT vs Claude fairly?

Run a two-week bake-off on your real work. Here's how we'd do it.

1. Pick five real tasks

Choose tasks you do every week. A customer reply, a quote from notes, a meeting summary, a spreadsheet question, a social post.

2. Give both the same setup

Same business brief, same voice samples, same files. Put them in a Project on each. A fair test needs the same context on both sides.

3. Use the same prompt on each

Copy and paste the exact prompt. If you need ideas, use the ones in AI Prompts for Small Business Owners.

4. Score the output, not the vibe

For each task, score 1 to 5 on accuracy, edits needed, and tone. Count the minutes it took to get to "ready to send."

5. Let the team vote

The tool people actually open is the tool that saves time. Ask the people who'll use it daily.

6. Check the admin side

Before paying, confirm the data settings, who can invite users, and how you remove someone who leaves.

Should we use both?

Some teams do, and it can make sense: one for images and quick questions, one for documents and building. The cost is real, though. Two subscriptions, two sets of settings, two places where customer data could end up. If you go that way, write one AI policy that covers both and keep customer data on business plans only.

What matters more than which tool you pick?

What you connect it to. A chat window saves minutes. An assistant wired into your inbox, calendar, files and accounting software saves hours, and that's true for both tools. If the real goal is fewer manual steps, read How to Use Claude for Your Small Business for the setup we use, and start with the tasks that repeat.

The short version

  • Business plans cost about the same: $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually on both, with premium seats for heavy users.
  • Both say business plans don't train on your data by default; personal accounts used for work are the real risk.
  • ChatGPT wins on built-in images and familiarity. Claude wins for us on long documents, writing and building software.
  • Run a two-week test on five real tasks with the same setup on both, and let the team vote.
  • Whichever you pick, a person reviews anything a customer sees.

Questions people ask

Q: Is Claude or ChatGPT better for business?

A: Neither wins everything. ChatGPT has a broader built-in feature set, including image generation. Many teams prefer Claude for long documents, writing that sounds human, and building software. Test both on your own tasks for two weeks.

Q: How much do ChatGPT Business and Claude Team cost?

A: As of October 2026, both list standard seats at $25 per user per month billed monthly or $20 billed annually, with a two-seat minimum, plus higher-priced premium seats for heavy users.

Q: Do ChatGPT and Claude train on business data?

A: Both companies say their business plans do not train on your data by default. Personal plans are different, so check the data settings on any individual account your team uses for work.

Q: Can my team use both ChatGPT and Claude?

A: Yes, and some teams do. Just keep customer data on the business plan of each, write one AI policy that covers both, and avoid paying for two tools nobody uses.
